In this course, we are diving into the exciting world of deductive reasoning, using Science and Math as a powerful backdrop to transform challenges into engaging puzzles. Using Math & Science to "escape" the classroom, separate stuck bowls, crack a safe, clear smoke from a room, or win contests by being able to "guess how many". By exploring the underlying logic, we will learn to solve problems creatively, and bring a fresh perspective that turns "problems" into "puzzles". This approach will make these skills enjoyable to apply in both everyday situations and classic brain teasers. We will exploit basic algebraic concepts and scientific laws through hands-on activities like kitchen experiments, crafting, and real-life problem-solving scenarios. Science and Math logic is more than simply gaining knowledge; it is about discovering the joy in tackling real-life puzzles. Where failure is always an option. Developing reasoning skills that make using our heads to solve problems both fun and rewarding. Students must have an "Understanding of the Concepts" of multiplication and division.

Through engineering we will discover how human beings can exist with and survive these powerful natural forces. As we examine these hazards students will work in teams to design experiments and models while creating a solution to withstand the forces of nature. Students will also be given a final task to solve a world issue of their choice and create their own idea for a resolution. This lab-type class is a space to explore and work digital escape rooms. A variety of digital escape room resources will be shared on an ongoing basis. We'll first touch on GoogleSuite -type 'escapes' (Forms, Sites, Slides, Drawings, etc). We'll then move onto website based escapes- created by both amateurs and professionals. The fun really gets going when we break into the wide world of point-and-click escape rooms. Finally, we will try our hand at free and low cost escape room puzzle games on Steam. No direct instruction will be provided, but an adult will be present for supervision and questions or guidance. Students can work rooms individually or with friends and classmates. Everyone will need to install Steam (see link below) and bring a laptop each week. Free and low cost (mostly less than $5) escape room game options will be shared, but purchases are the responsibly of the student/ family. Students could play free games the entire session, but these are mostly GSuite types and may not be the favorite ;) Purchased games provide several hours of puzzle play (therefore several class periods), but this will of course vary by individual (particularly age and skill level). Students may choose to play games on their own outside of class time (they can be a little addictive!), but resources are shared with the intent that they will utilize class time working their escapes! Additional game costs are optional and variable- families will have control over this additional cost.

This course pairs with the CK-12 online free text, and students may read that on their own to complete a full semester of credit in chemistry. We will be covering chapter 12 and beyond. This is not required to participate in the lab, but will help students to understand the material better. Students may use other texts if they choose to compliment the course. Students must follow directions and safety instructions in lab! We will be working with glassware, and doing things that are potentially dangerous if they do not follow instructions. Have you ever heard someone say that video games rot your brain? Is this true? If not, why do people say this? Have you heard about recent studies on social media and mental health? Have you ever 'lost time' to endless scrolling? What even is 'doomscrolling' or 'rage-baiting'? Have you ever felt a sense of panic or dread when you've been separated from your phone or lost internet connectivity? What does this all mean?!?!? Come join us as we discuss these questions and more. This course will be a creative mashup of psychology, current events, social commentary, mindfulness, and wellbeing. We'll begin with some basics to inform our exploration of human thinking, behavior, and experience in our modern world. Homework will not be assigned- we will instead begin each class period by listening to short podcast episodes or watching documentary clips. This communal media consumption will provide fodder for our student-led discussions. The intention of this class is an interesting and engaging search to understand how our human minds can best thrive in our modern world- we will likely generate more questions than answers ;) We may partake in some 'brain food' snacking, so please be sure to note any food allergies.
